Every participant is given a classification according to their ability level from individuals with a visual impairment to kids with spina bifida, cerebral palsy or other physically disabling conditions. This way your child will only compete against other kids with the same classification. Classifications are determined by sanctioned classifiers. Oftentimes classifiers are present at the meet so participants can be classed in before competition. All athletes must be classed by a sanctioned classifier in order to compete at the National Junior Disability Championships (NJDC).
Most kids practice and compete with a local sports club. A list of Paralympic sports clubs can be found HERE.
Other sports clubs may be available in your area as well. Here is a list of regional sports organizations that can help you find a club in your area.
If a club cannot be found or is not an option, your child can also compete as an independent. If this is the case, you as the parent may have to do a little more work, including coaching and registering your child for the meets. Meets can be found in every region across the nation. Some events are sanctioned by WSUSA, which means they are national qualifiers, while other meets are not. A list of sanctioned events can be found HERE.
