Containers are available in most garden centers and come in a wide variety of materials, sizes, shapes, and colors and in equally wide price ranges. Materials include decay-resistant wood, clay, plastic "wood", ceramic, stone, concrete, and many others. A great place to begin is the popular heavy-duty plastic containers that closely match the color of terra cotta clay pots. They are relatively inexpensive in the larger sizes needed, are lightweight so they are easier to move around initially, and are durable enough to be left outside over the winter without breaking. In climates that have freezing temperatures, expensive clay or ceramic pots should be emptied and stored for the winter to prevent breakage. Remember that even lightweight containers, when filled with moist soil, are heavy. Check with building engineers if using containers on balconies or rooftops.
