Murderball is a suspenseful and inspiring documentary about a group of highly competitive quad rugby players. Winner of the Documentary Audience Award at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, Murderball smashes all the stereotypes that one may possess about what a person with quadriplegia can achieve.
This film portrays the personal lives of the players and the challenges that they face on a daily basis, such as dressing, cooking, and driving. Most importantly though, Murderball highlights these quad ruby players as fierce, remarkable athletes who won't let their disability impede their enthusiasm and drive.
Murderball was once the original name for quad rugby because it is such a high-impact and fast-action sport. This film does a great job of showing the action on the court as well as the emotions involved in winning and losing. It features the rivalry between Team USA and Team Canada as they battle towards a gold medal at the 2004 Paralympics in Athens.
The heated match between these two teams is enhanced even more by the rivalry between individual team players. Former member of Team USA, Joe Soares, gets cut from the team and accepts a job as the head coach of Team Canada. As coach, he has only one goal: to beat Team USA. Meanwhile, the captain of Team USA, Marc Zupan, and his players train to beat Canada and become the number one quad rugby team in the world.
As a great sports documentary, Murderball allows viewers to participate in the action on and off the court and be inspired by these world-class athletes. It demonstrates that one can accept life's challenges by turning them into opportunities. This fact sheet was last updated on 01-30-2006.
