National Center on Physical Activity and Disability (NCPAD) presents a great new resource for stroke survivors, persons with multiple sclerosis, and/or wheelchair users, as well as rehabilitation centers and fitness centers! The DVD includes "Core and Stability Exercises for Stroke Survivors and People with Multiple Sclerosis," as well as "How to Prevent Rotator Cuff Injuries for Wheelchair Users," and is a compilation of exercises produced by NCPAD and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC).

This DVD has a close-caption option, and contains three sections:

  1. Core and Stability Exercises for Stroke Survivors
    • Seated Abdominal Crunch with Thera-band
    • Seated Back Flexion and Extension
    • Seated Lateral Spinal Flexion
    • Trunk Rotation
    • Diagonal Trunk Rotation

NOTE: RealPlayer is required to view each videoclip.

  2. Core and Stability Exercises for People with Multiple Sclerosis
    • Seated Abdominal Crunch with Thera-band

Core and trunk stability exercises work on the muscles of the back and the abdominal area (the "core" muscles). Exercises shown in these two sections of the DVD are those that can be done at home or in a fitness center setting, using home-based, portable equipment options such as Thera-band elastic resistance bands, free weights, wrist weights, or a weighted ball.

  3. How to Prevent Rotator Cuff Injuries for Wheelchair Users
    • External Rotation
    • Internal Rotation
    • Shoulder Abduction
    • Shoulder Extension
    • "Empty Can" Exercise

NOTE: RealPlayer is required to view each videoclip.

This section discusses shoulder anatomy and shows practical exercises that work on strengthening the rotator cuff muscles. An increase in rotator cuff strength decreases the symptoms and effects of instability, impingement, tendinitis, and other shoulder injuries.
