Notes

The goal of SAIL HAMPTON ROADS Adaptive Sailing program is to provide sailing instruction and recreational opportunities to people with disabilities to promote freedom and independence in order to encourage participation and competition with able-bodied sailors.

To meet this goal, SAIL HAMPTON ROADS works with area hospitals, rehabilitation centers and agencies that serve the disabled community. We also maintain relations with the Sailors with Special Needs committee of the United States Sailing Association.

We have equipped our Sonar keel boats with seats and other modifications to accommodate varying levels of disability. Our location at the Downtown Hampton Public Piers is accessible and our docks are being equipped with a transfer lift. Sailing instructors have special training in working with the disabled. Future plans include training and supporting a sailing team to compete in national and international regattas for the disabled, up to and including the Paralympic Games.

The Hampton Roads Community Sailing Center is a non-profit organization, established with a sole goal: to open opportunities for all adults and youth to experience the joy and freedom of sailing. The Center has three SAIL HAMPTON ROADS programs designed for specific interest groups: Youth Sailing, Adult Sailing , and Adaptive Sailing.
